About The Cowichan Valley
The Town of Lake Cowichan is called “Vancouver Island’s Best Kept Secret” by locals. It is a peaceful lakefront town, uncrowded and affordable, yet close to shopping, recreation, health and other services.
Lake Cowichan is a large freshwater lake midway between Victoria and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. According to Wikipedia, it is one of “B.C.’s most pristine lakes”. Situated in the sunny Cowichan Valley, the area has one of the highest average annual temperatures in Canada. Decades ago, the area was a vital part of the Cowichan Valley logging industry. Much of the land around the lake is still owned by logging companies, but, with the mill closed, small parcels of land are slowly being sold off. Today, lakefront living offers many recreational and tourism opportunities.
The area has a population of about 3000. On the north side of the lake is the community of Youbou. To the south are Mesachie Lake and Honeymoon Bay. Along the eastern shore is the Town of Lake Cowichan, the largest community.
